Masterson’s Tavern , situated in the center of Moonee Ponds , markets itself as a trendy “hipster” hangout , but my unfortunate encounter at this establishment quickly devolved into an unforgettable, terrible experience. While the bar may seem appealing from the exterior , what I found behind its entrance was shocking and unacceptable on multiple levels .

From the moment I stepped inside , it was clear that upkeep was not a priority at this bar . The floors were sticky , and a foul smell of stale beer and dirty bathrooms suffused the entire venue . Reeking of a mixture of urine , decay and a sickly smell. The main bar, which should be the primary feature of any pub, was cluttered with dirty glasses and trash that looked like it had been ignored for a long time . The toilet was in even a truly awful state— clogged , with a shattered handle and walls covered in what I can only assume was human excrement .
